Tesla wants to kill EV incentives in US because of Musk, but it is lobbying for them elsewhere

Tesla’s Stance on EV Incentives: A Tale of Two Markets

Tesla, the electric vehicle (EV) giant, finds itself in a peculiar position when it comes to lobbying for EV incentives in different markets. While the company has been advocating for the elimination of EV incentives in the US, it is simultaneously pushing for more incentives in the UK. This stark contrast highlights the internal struggle within Tesla, where CEO Elon Musk’s politics seem to take precedence over the company’s mission.

In the US, Tesla has aligned itself with former President Donald Trump’s stance on eliminating all EV incentives. This shift in position comes as Musk, a prominent supporter of Trump, has steered Tesla closer to right-wing politics. Despite Musk’s personal beliefs, Tesla was previously lobbying for federal EV incentives under the Biden administration. However, recent reports indicate that the company has communicated its support for ending EV incentives to the Trump transition team, signaling a shift in priorities.

On the other hand, in the UK, Tesla’s approach to EV incentives is drastically different. A leaked letter from Tesla’s head of Europe, Joe Ward, revealed the company’s efforts to lobby for increased EV incentives and higher taxes on petrol vehicles. Ward emphasized the importance of electric vehicles in reducing emissions and proposed revenue-neutral schemes to incentivize zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) uptake. This proactive approach in the UK stands in stark contrast to Tesla’s stance in the US, raising questions about the company’s consistency in advocating for sustainable transport.

The dichotomy in Tesla’s lobbying efforts underscores a dilemma faced by the company – balancing its mission to accelerate sustainable transport with Musk’s political affiliations. While Tesla’s actions in the UK align with its goal of promoting EV adoption and reducing emissions, its stance in the US reflects Musk’s alignment with Trump’s anti-EV incentives agenda. This discrepancy raises concerns about the extent to which Musk’s politics influence Tesla’s decision-making process.

Ultimately, the divergence in Tesla’s advocacy for EV incentives underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability within the company. As Tesla navigates the complex landscape of EV policy, it must prioritize its mission over individual political agendas. By ensuring a consistent and principled approach to advocating for sustainable transport, Tesla can uphold its commitment to driving positive change in the automotive industry.
