The third week of December brought some interesting developments in the China EV market. Nio saw a 23% increase in insurance registrations, Xiaomi was up by 3%, BYD experienced a 10% decline, and Tesla was down by 5% compared to the previous week. Nio’s Onvo brand reported a 22% increase in registrations for its L60 SUV, with 2,090 units sold.

Week 51 of the year, which fell between December 16 and 22, was used for year-on-year comparisons. Data on weekly sales is provided by Li Auto, based on insurance registration numbers. These figures include new energy vehicles (NEVs), which encompass battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and range-extended electric vehicles (EREVs). While hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs) are also included, their sales are negligible in China. Onvo registrations, on the other hand, are sourced from China EV DataTracker.

BYD emerged as the top performer with 87,700 insurance registrations, marking a 10.3% decrease from the previous week but a 37.3% increase year-on-year. The company sells both BEVs and PHEVs, with BEVs accounting for 40% of November sales. Wuling reported 19,800 registrations, down by 9.2% from the previous week but up by 45.59% compared to the same period last year.

Tesla registered 17,600 units, marking a 4.9% decline from the previous week and a 4.86% decrease year-on-year. Li Auto recorded 13,900 registrations, a slight drop of 1.4% from the previous week but a 14.88% increase compared to the same period last year. Geely reported 11,700 registrations, a 9.3% decline from the previous week, with no year-over-year data available.

Leapmotor achieved 10,300 registrations, reflecting a 3.0% increase from the previous week and an impressive 145.24% rise year-on-year. Huawei’s Aito saw 7,700 registrations, up by 14.9% from the previous week and 28.33% higher than the same period last year. Deepal recorded 7,600 registrations, showing a slight decline of 1.3% from the previous week but a significant 100.00% increase year-on-year.

Xpeng, backed by Volkswagen, registered 7,400 vehicles, up by 2.8% from the previous week and an 89.74% growth year-on-year. Xiaomi reported 6,000 registrations, a 3.4% increase from the previous week. Nio saw 5,400 registrations, up by 22.7% from the previous week and 31.71% higher year-on-year.

Nio’s Onvo brand registered 2,090 units of its L60 SUV, a 22.4% increase from the previous week. Nio Inc. recorded a total of 7,490 units in weeks 51 and 18,705 through December, aiming to sell at least 30,400 cars by the end of the month. Zeekr registered 5,300 units, a 1.9% increase from the previous week and an 89.29% rise year-on-year.

Luxeed by Huawei reported 3,600 units, up by 5.9% from the previous week. BYD’s Denza registered 2,800 vehicles, marking a 12.5% decline from the previous week but a 21.74% increase year-on-year.

Overall, the China EV market continues to show dynamic shifts in sales figures, with various manufacturers experiencing both growth and decline in registrations. The competition is fierce, with companies striving to capture a larger market share in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle industry.
