Block party: Who can build the ultimate lego car in 90 minutes?

The Great Autocar Lego Challenge

During a recent team-building exercise at Autocar, we were tasked with building Lego cars inspired by our favorite models. Armed with tubs of Lego provided by our deputy editor, the challenge was on to create the most impressive vehicle.

As I sifted through the array of Lego bits, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of pieces to choose from. While I was focused on sourcing Technic parts for my build, my colleagues were already well on their way to creating their masterpieces.

After much trial and error, my creation, the Armstrong Piddly, began to take shape. With a bonnet, windscreen, and a Lego figure sporting a helmet, my car started to resemble a classic trials vehicle. The addition of a spare wheel and roll bar further enhanced its authenticity.

Despite some setbacks and last-minute adjustments, the front axle and bulkhead finally came together, bringing my vision to life. While I had envisioned a design reminiscent of a Dellow Mk1 or Troll T6, the final result ended up resembling a mishmash of a Maserati 250F and a Williams FW26.

With my colleagues resorting to questionable tactics and elaborate presentations, it was a relief to see honest craftsmanship prevail. In the end, it was clear that the man who stayed true to the building process deserved to claim victory.

Although the prize—a Lego trophy crafted by our editor-at-large—was not quite what I had hoped for, the experience of creating my E-dirty M3 was truly rewarding. Despite my initial lack of engineering skills, I managed to cheat my way to a respectable finish.
