Why we finally love the Toyota Supra – just as it gets the axe

The Final Goodbye: Toyota GR Supra Bids Adieu with a Limited-Run Final Edition

After nearly six years since its launch in early 2019 at the Detroit motor show, the iconic Toyota GR Supra is preparing to exit the automotive stage with a bang. The latest limited-run Final Edition special is set to mark the end of an era for this beloved sports car.

Despite the passage of time, it feels like just yesterday when Toyota first hinted at reviving the Supra back in 2012. Prototypes began surfacing in 2018, and by September 2019, enthusiasts like myself had the chance to test drive a pre-production ‘A90’ model. The journey from concept to production has been a whirlwind, and it’s hard to believe that the Supra’s time is already up.

The Final Edition, limited to just 300 units worldwide, is a fitting tribute to the Supra’s legacy. With enhancements like increased power output, KW dampers from the GT4 track variant, new drilled brake discs, an Akrapovic exhaust, sump baffles for oil starvation prevention, additional body bracing, exterior aerodynamic upgrades, and race-inspired seats, this special edition is designed to be a true track weapon.

While the Supra may have faced challenges in the UK market with limited availability, the Final Edition aims to leave a lasting impression on enthusiasts. The exact number of units allocated to the UK remains unknown, but the impact of this farewell model is undeniable.

My perspective on the Supra has evolved over time, unlike my unwavering admiration for the Alpine A110. Initially, the Supra left me wanting more, but as time passed, I found myself drawn to its unique character and performance. While it may not have been a direct competitor to the Porsche 718 Cayman or the Alpine A110, the Supra carved out its own niche in the sports car segment.

Today, I appreciate the Supra’s distinctive charm and capabilities more than ever. The six-cylinder engine, automatic gearbox, and other features of the standard model hold a special place in my heart, showcasing the essence of what made the Supra a standout performer.
