Tesla’s Megafactory in Shanghai Goes from Construction to Trial Production in Seven Months

Fast Technology recently released satellite images showcasing the transformation of a 200,000 square meter area near Tesla’s gigafactory into a megafactory within just seven months. The groundbreaking ceremony for the megafactory took place on May 23, and by December 27, trial production had already commenced at the site.

Dedicated to producing Megapack energy storage batteries for both domestic and international markets, the megafactory utilizes lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP) cells from CATL and BYD to manufacture the China-made Megapacks. Each Megapack boasts a capacity of over 3 MWh, with the new facility capable of producing 10,000 Megapacks annually, equivalent to a staggering 40 GWh of energy storage capacity.

With an investment of approximately 1.45 billion yuan (202 million USD) in the new plant, Tesla has already secured its first Megapack orders with the Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group. Mass production of Megapacks is expected to kick off in the first quarter of 2025, marking a significant milestone for the company.

The construction of the megafactory has set a new benchmark for “Tesla speed” in China, following the rapid construction of Tesla’s first Shanghai plant in 2019, which was completed within a year. The efficiency and speed at which the megafactory was constructed and brought into operation have garnered praise from Chinese media outlets.

The satellite images provided by Fast Technology and the detailed progress reports on the construction and development of the megafactory serve as a testament to Tesla’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the energy storage sector. The seamless integration of advanced technology and environmentally friendly practices in the production of Megapacks is a reflection of Tesla’s dedication to driving the transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.
