Jeep to Discontinue Grand Cherokee in Europe, Focus on EVs
Jeep has announced that they will be taking the Grand Cherokee off the market in Europe this year, with the Wrangler also potentially facing the same fate. This decision comes as Jeep shifts its focus towards introducing new electric vehicles, with the upcoming release of the all-electric Wagoneer S, set to arrive by the end of the year.
Eric Laforge, the head of Jeep in Europe, confirmed at the Brussels motor show that a change in Jeep’s model lineup will occur with the launch of the Wagoneer S. With Jeep’s sales primarily driven by smaller models like the Avenger in Europe, having two large SUVs like the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler no longer makes sense. The Wagoneer S, being all-electric, will better align with CO2 and EV sales targets.
A similar scenario may unfold for the Wrangler when the Recon EV is introduced, as both models cater to hardcore off-road enthusiasts. Laforge mentioned that the Recon will be a strong alternative to the Wrangler, offering similar capabilities in a smaller package.
Jeep is gearing up for the launch of the new Compass, a compact SUV designed and manufactured in Europe. Laforge emphasized the importance of the Compass in strengthening Jeep’s presence in Europe and potentially expanding its reach to other markets worldwide. The new Compass will feature multiple powertrain options, including electric and hybrid variants.
While the Avenger and Compass will lead the way for Jeep in Europe, there are plans to introduce a replacement for the Renegade by 2026. This new model will follow the trend of being multi-energy, catering to the evolving demands of the market.
Despite the focus on smaller models, Jeep remains committed to maintaining its reputation as a brand known for all-terrain capability. While not every Jeep may be a hardcore off-roader, the brand aims to provide safe and stable all-wheel-drive options across its lineup.
