Mazda CX-60 Review 2025, Price & Specs

The Mazda CX-60 diesel is a unique offering in the market, with a 3.3-litre straight-six engine that produces 197bhp. Despite its larger capacity, it only slightly outperforms the BMW X3 20d, which has a 2.0-litre engine with 188bhp. The Mazda’s specific output of 60bhp per litre is significantly lower than the BMW’s 94bhp per litre, but this is intentional. Mazda believes that an understressed six-cylinder engine will provide a more enjoyable driving experience and better fuel efficiency, boasting a thermal efficiency of 40%.

On paper, the rear-wheel-drive CX-60 is 57kg heavier than the four-wheel-drive X3. However, thanks to slightly higher torque and similar gear ratios, the CX-60 proves to be faster in all metrics. It accelerates 0.7 seconds quicker to 60mph and 2.2 seconds faster from 30-70mph in fourth gear compared to the BMW. While the Alfa Romeo Stelvio still outperforms the Mazda in terms of outright speed from a standstill, the CX-60 holds its own in in-gear acceleration.

The CX-60 diesel offers a novel driving experience with its old-fashioned characteristics. It takes a bit longer to start up and can be noisy at low revs and loads, reminiscent of a city bus. However, as the engine warms up, it transforms into a smooth and refined straight-six diesel with a satisfying sound and ample mid-range torque. The mechanical interaction and honesty of the engine may appeal to enthusiasts, despite its lack of refinement compared to electric vehicles.

The mild-hybrid system in the CX-60 works efficiently to shut down the engine when coasting downhill, improving fuel efficiency and reducing noise. The eight-speed automatic transmission is smooth and responsive, selecting shift points intelligently. The brakes, operating via a by-wire system, deliver excellent performance, stopping the CX-60 in a similar distance to the Audi SQ5 despite damp track conditions.

Overall, the Mazda CX-60 diesel offers a unique and engaging driving experience with its understressed straight-six engine, providing a blend of performance and efficiency. While it may not be the fastest SUV in its class, its character and mechanical charm set it apart from the competition.
