New Mercedes S-Class Coupe Hits the Trademark Office

The automotive industry is constantly evolving, with consumer preferences shifting towards SUVs and crossovers. This trend has led to the decline of two-door cars such as coupes and convertibles. Mercedes-Benz has taken note of this shift and made the decision to discontinue models like the SLC, S-Class Coupe/Convertible, and AMG GT Convertible. In an effort to streamline their lineup, they have merged the C-Class and E-Class Coupe/Convertible into the new CLE.

However, for those who still crave a big Benz with two doors, there may be hope on the horizon. Recent trademark filings with the European Union Intellectual Property Office reveal designs for two-door luxury cars, one featuring an AMG variant and the other a Maybach model. These designs showcase a distinctive split rear window, reminiscent of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept.

Interestingly, these trademarks were not filed by Mercedes-Benz directly, but by a Swiss company called Robu Aktiengesellschaft. This same firm previously trademarked the design for the Bussink GT R SpeedLegend, a modified AMG GTR turned speedster. The possibility of a new S-Class Coupe being developed by a third party adds an intriguing twist to the story.

Building a business case for a large Benz coupe may be challenging, but it could potentially fit into Mercedes’ newly established Mythos series of ultra-expensive, limited-run models. The AMG PureSpeed, a roofless SL63 with F1-inspired design elements, sets the precedent for exclusive and high-priced offerings from the brand.

While the cost of a Mythos-branded coupe would undoubtedly be substantial, it could serve as a fitting tribute to the iconic V-12 engine. With emissions regulations becoming stricter and Mercedes’ increasing focus on electric vehicles, the days of the V-12 engine are numbered. A luxurious two-door coupe could be a final hurrah for this legendary powerplant.

In a market saturated with SUVs, the prospect of a new Mercedes-Benz coupe is a refreshing change. Mercedes has a rich history of producing coveted two-door cars, making the idea of a new S-Class-derived coupe all the more enticing. Whether Mercedes themselves or a third party is behind the development of this coupe remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the allure of a grand Benz coupe is hard to resist.
