Elaphe Propulsion Technologies, a Slovenian firm, has unveiled a groundbreaking innovation in the form of the Sonic 1, an in-wheel electric motor designed to work with high-performance brakes. This cutting-edge technology has been showcased in a concept supercar boasting an impressive 2000bhp.

The Sonic 1 is a sleek electric motor capable of delivering 268bhp and 737lb ft of torque, housed within the rim of a 21-inch wheel. Unlike other in-wheel motors, its slim design allows for the integration of a disc brake up to 400mm in size, making it ideal for use on race tracks while adding 40kg of unsprung weight per unit.

The Italdesign Quintessenza, a striking pick-up-inspired supercar concept, serves as a platform for displaying the Elaphe technology, with a Sonic 1 unit installed in each wheel to achieve a total output exceeding 2000bhp. Notably, Elaphe has engineered the Sonic 1 to be compatible with combustion-powered vehicles, particularly focusing on enhancing the performance of rear-drive sports cars by enabling additional power to be distributed to the front axle without increasing frontal area.

Elaphe has developed proprietary software for the Sonic 1 units, including the Elaphe Traction Control system, which offers significantly faster response times compared to standard vehicles. Additionally, the company has introduced a ‘vibroacoustics’ system that allows for customizable sound profiles and haptic feedback, tailored to suit the preferences of different manufacturers.

Luka Ambrozic, Elaphe’s commercial director, emphasized the company’s commitment to optimizing performance density through continuous innovation. He highlighted the importance of software in effectively managing power distribution to each wheel, enhancing overall vehicle performance. Furthermore, the development team prioritized efficiency by positioning the motors closer to the components they power, eliminating the need for bulky motor installations at the front or rear of vehicles.

Elaphe’s groundbreaking technology promises to revolutionize electric and hybrid vehicles, offering unparalleled performance and efficiency. With a focus on advanced software integration and innovative design, the Sonic 1 in-wheel electric motor sets a new standard for high-performance automotive engineering.
