Geely Delivers 1,500 Methanol-Powered Ride-Hailing Vehicles to Harbin Traffic Group
Geely Holding Group recently held a ceremony to deliver the first batch of 1,500 ride-hailing vehicles to Harbin Traffic Group. These vehicles, which are fourth-generation Emgrand methanol-fueled electric hybrids, will be utilized in Harbin to provide low-carbon mobility services for the upcoming Asian Winter Games Harbin 2025.
Equipped with methanol-electric hybrid engines and hybrid electric drive systems, these vehicles boast 20 intelligent driving modes. They are designed for rapid startup in low-temperature conditions typical of high-altitude and cold regions. Additionally, the vehicles can reduce cabin heating power consumption by utilizing waste heat from the engine. With a methanol consumption rate of only 9.2 liters per 100 kilometers (equivalent to 3.4 liters of gasoline), these hybrid vehicles can reduce carbon emissions by 42%.
Geely will also be providing a fleet of methanol-fueled service vehicles to support various activities related to the Games, including the torch relay, traffic management, and welcoming services. The company has already delivered 350 methanol-fueled hybrid vehicles to the organizing committee.
In an effort to support the development of the methanol-powered vehicle industry chain in Heilongjiang province and expand carbon-neutral solutions for cold environments, Geely is working on establishing a comprehensive network of methanol refueling stations in Harbin.
Geely has successfully developed over 20 methanol-powered vehicle models, accumulating an operation distance of more than 20 billion kilometers. The company has made strides in transitioning methanol vehicles from small-scale pilot operations to large-scale adoption.
In 2025, Geely plans to globally debut two new models featuring its next-generation “Super Methanol Electric Hybrid” technology, including a sedan and an SUV. These vehicles will have the ability to operate on a mixture of methanol and gasoline in the same fuel tank, with flexible ratios. They are designed to start at temperatures as low as -40°C, achieving an impressive engine thermal efficiency of 48.15%.
With its commitment to innovation and sustainability, Geely continues to lead the way in developing environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
