Allroad returns: Audi Q6 E-tron gets portal axles in off-road makeover

Audi has taken the wraps off its latest creation – the Q6 E-tron Off-Road concept. This rugged version of the electric SUV promises to be a go-anywhere vehicle that is ready to tackle any terrain with ease.

Described as “Quattro redefined”, the Q6 E-tron Sportback has undergone significant modifications to make it suitable for off-road adventures. The concept features a bold visual makeover, a substantial suspension lift, and robust all-terrain tires.

While full technical specifications are yet to be confirmed, Audi has revealed that the concept is equipped with portal axles. These axles, which raise the axle housings above the wheel hubs, provide increased ground clearance and enhanced off-road capabilities.

Portal axles are typically found in extreme 4×4 vehicles and have not been utilized in an Audi model before. Mercedes-Benz employs them in vehicles like the Unimog and G63 4×4², while Ineos recently incorporated them into the Grenadier prototype.

The Q6 E-tron Off-Road concept boasts a striking new appearance that highlights its off-road prowess. With features like ultra-bright spotlights, a roof rack, widened wheel arches, and rugged body cladding, this concept is sure to turn heads wherever it goes.

Additional details about the modifications made to the Q6 concept are expected to be revealed soon. It is speculated that the concept will make its debut at Austria’s FAT Ice Race, an event where the Volkswagen Group typically participates.

This off-road variant of the Q6 is a progression from the futuristic Activesphere concept unveiled in 2023. The Activesphere concept hinted at a new generation of Audi Allroad models and showcased Audi’s vision for off-road-ready vehicles.

Overseeing Audi’s design direction is Massimo Frascella, a former Land Rover designer known for his work on the Defender and Range Rover models. With his expertise in creating capable off-roaders, the Q6 E-tron Off-Road concept is in good hands.
