The BMW iX5 is set to make its debut in 2026, kickstarting BMW’s ambitious plan to fully electrify its SUV lineup with six new launches in the next three years. This marks one of the most comprehensive engineering programs ever undertaken by BMW and its M performance car division.

One of the most exciting additions to the iX5 lineup will be a hydrogen-powered version, expected to join the range in 2028. Co-developed with Toyota, this hydrogen variant will pave the way for multiple fuel cell options across BMW’s models by the end of the decade.

In addition to the electric iX5, BMW will also introduce a new generation of the X5, the original SUV that has seen over 2.2 million sales since its inception in 1999. The new X5 will come equipped with upgraded petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid drivetrains.

While the upcoming iX3 will be based on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, both the iX5 and X5 will utilize an upgraded version of the CLAR platform. This decision was made to accommodate the X5’s full range of combustion engine options without incurring excessive costs.

The iX5 will feature sixth-generation electric drive components, new-generation batteries with greater energy density, and a fully networked 800V electric architecture. This upgraded CLAR platform will also serve as the basis for the new X6 and X7 models, ensuring that all of BMW’s SUV lineup will offer an electric option.

Design cues from the Neue Klasse concepts will be evident in the iX5 and X5, with a new front fascia featuring triangular-shaped headlights and a new X-shaped lighting graphic planned for the rear. The exterior styling will be smoother and more monolithic, with a focus on aerodynamic efficiency.

The X5 M60, expected to be the highlight of the range, will offer both plug-in hybrid and V8 powertrains to meet different market requirements. The range will also include an electric iX5 M Performance model with over 600bhp.

Overall, the new X5 and iX5 will retain the familiar silhouette of their predecessors while incorporating new technologies and design elements to meet the demands of the electrified SUV market. With BMW’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, the iX5 is poised to lead the way in the electrification of luxury SUVs.
