Toyota Motor and partners to develop hydrogen refuelling systems

Toyota Motor Europe has teamed up with Hydrogen Refuelling Solutions (HRS) and Engie to develop and test next-generation hydrogen refuelling systems. These systems are aimed at being faster and more cost-efficient, in line with the EU’s goal to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen infrastructure.

At the core of this new solution is the Twin Mid Flow Technology, featuring a higher-flow dual nozzle that enables heavy-duty vehicles to be refuelled in under ten minutes and light-duty vehicles in less than five minutes. As part of the agreement, Toyota will provide a test bench and a truck equipped with the Twin Mid Flow Technology.

HRS and Engie will work on developing compatible hydrogen refuelling stations for testing in the EU-funded Refuelling Heavy Duty with very High flow Hydrogen (RHeaDHy) project starting in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Thiebault Paquet, Vice President of R&D at Toyota Motor Europe, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “Development of the Twin Mid Flow Technology is a next step in our effort to stimulate the growth of hydrogen ecosystems. We are excited about this new partnership.”

The technology allows a single dispenser to serve both heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles, potentially revolutionizing the hydrogen refuelling station model. Moreover, the cost of installing these new hydrogen refuelling stations is expected to be significantly lower, aligning with the European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) targets.

By 2030, the AFIR aims to have publicly accessible hydrogen stations every 200km along the TEN-T networks. The RHeaDHy project, funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership under a grant agreement, is part of the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. It focuses on developing high-performance refuelling stations for heavy-duty vehicles, with the goal of refuelling 700 bar hydrogen trucks with 100kg of hydrogen within ten minutes.

In related news, Toyota Motor recently announced plans to construct a new plant in China for the production of electric vehicles (EVs) under its premium Lexus brand. The company continues to make strides in the development of sustainable transportation solutions, further solidifying its commitment to environmental stewardship.
