Volkswagen Unveils Its Cheapest EV Yet

Volkswagen has finally given us a glimpse of its answer to low-cost Chinese electric cars with the preview of its cheapest EV model. The German automaker showcased the new entry-level electric vehicle at a meeting held at its Wolfsburg plant. Priced at €20,000, or just over $20,000, this new EV is set to kick off a series of affordable electric cars from Volkswagen.

The first model in this new lineup will be the production version of the ID.2, which was initially unveiled in March 2022. Volkswagen announced that the ID.2 models will hit dealerships in 2026 with a base price of less than €25,000. This move is part of Volkswagen’s ambitious plans to compete with leading EV manufacturers like BYD and Tesla.

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Shafer emphasized the significance of this new entry-level EV in the company’s future strategy. He stated, “With the conclusion of negotiations in December, we set the largest future plan in Volkswagen’s history in motion.” The ID.2, based on the MEB Entry Platform, is expected to offer a range of up to 279 miles (450 km) and will be accompanied by an SUV version in the upcoming lineup.

The show car for Volkswagen’s entry-level EV will be introduced soon, with the production model slated for a 2027 reveal. The Wolfsburg plant is being prepared to produce these new models, emphasizing Volkswagen’s commitment to electric mobility. However, for those in the US, the new entry-level EV may not be available as Shafer described it as “an affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe.”

With a focus on affordability, quality, and sustainability, Volkswagen’s new entry-level EV is set to make a mark in the electric vehicle market.
