Kia has officially unveiled its first-ever van, the Kia PV5, which is set to compete with the likes of the Volkswagen ID Buzz in the futuristic van market. The PV5 is just the beginning of Kia’s new line of models known as Platform Beyond Vehicles (PBVs), with a larger PV7 expected to follow in two years to take on competitors like the Ford Transit and Farizon’s SV.
Unlike some of its competitors, the PV5 has been developed as an electric van from the ground up, rather than being based on a combustion-engine platform. While specific technical details have not yet been confirmed, the PV5 concept showcased in 2024 utilized a modified version of the E-GMP platform, which is also found in Kia’s electric SUVs. It is likely to feature a single front-mounted electric motor with 201bhp and 209lb ft of torque, similar to the Kia EV3 crossover. However, performance may vary once the van is fully loaded.
The PV5 is expected to offer a range of battery options, similar to the EV3, ranging from 270 to 375 miles depending on the battery size. In addition to the passenger and cargo van configurations that have been revealed, Kia has hinted at additional variants that will be showcased at its upcoming EV Day event. The versatile skateboard-style EV platform allows for various adaptations, including pick-up and camper van forms.
The exterior design of the PV5 stays true to the concept, featuring angular LED daytime running lights and sleek headlights integrated into the bumper. While the interior design has not been fully revealed, images released by Kia show a split instrument and infotainment display screens, a departure from the brand’s typical combined fascia in its cars.
