Ford has issued a recall for 240,510 SUVs due to seat-belt hardware issues. The affected vehicles are 2020 and 2021 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified improperly secured seat-belt buckle anchor bolts and belt retractor bolts at the second-row center seat as the main concerns.
If the bolts are not properly fastened, they may fail to adequately restrain occupants during a collision, posing a higher risk of injury. Ford has stated that signs of loose bolts may include squeaks and rattles. While there have been no reported injuries related to this issue, Ford has received five warranty claims, prompting the investigation.
It is believed that a supplier deviated from standard operating procedures during assembly, leading to the problem. Ford will conduct inspections at all seating positions to check the anchor bolts and the second-row center seat-belt retractor bolts. If any loose bolts are found, the necessary components will be replaced at no cost to the owners. Ford will also reimburse customers for any previous related repair work.
Owners can expect to receive notification letters starting March 31 and can contact Ford’s customer service department with any queries. The recall, identified by reference number 25S09, affects the generation of Explorer introduced in 2020 and continuing with a refresh in 2025. The Lincoln Aviator, which shares the Explorer’s platform, is also included in the recall.
