SAIC Volkswagen Launches Fifth-Generation EA888 Engine

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- SAIC Volkswagen made an exciting announcement on February 5th, revealing that the fifth-generation EA888 engine has officially entered mass production in China. This cutting-edge engine is set to make its debut on the Teramont Pro model, showcasing the latest in automotive technology and performance.

Known for its superior capabilities in direct injection, turbocharging, and dual balance shafts, the EA888 engine has a proven track record of powering vehicles from renowned brands like Porsche, Audi, and Volkswagen.

The fifth-generation EA888 engine introduces a 500bar fuel system, providing high injection pressure for enhanced power output. Compared to its predecessor, the new engine boasts a significant increase in maximum power from 162 kW to 200 kW (a 23.5% boost) and torque from 350 N·m to 400 N·m (a 14.3% gain). These enhancements enable the Teramont Pro to achieve impressive acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds.

To support the engine’s higher performance levels, key components such as the crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons have been reinforced structurally. Redesigned crankshafts and main oil passages improve load-bearing capacity and lubrication efficiency. The introduction of a vane-type oil pump also enhances oil circulation rates for optimal engine function.

The fifth-generation EA888 engine features a shorter air intake path for improved throttle response, allowing boosted air to reach the intake manifold more efficiently. An integrated inter-cooler intake manifold design facilitates a heating and cooling cycle for the throttle body and intake manifold, preventing throttle body icing in extreme cold conditions and enhancing overall engine reliability.

Equipped with Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) turbocharging technology, the fifth-generation EA888 engine adjusts air intake intelligently under various conditions, reducing turbo lag and optimizing performance. The engine’s redesigned camshaft and VTG turbocharger enable Miller cycle operation across all scenarios, promoting ideal fuel-air mixture combustion.

By harnessing the power of the fifth-generation EA888 engine, vehicles can achieve impressive fuel efficiency, with consumption rates as low as 8.35 L/100 km under WLTC conditions. This groundbreaking engine sets a new standard for performance, efficiency, and innovation in the automotive industry.
