New Volkswagen Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport recalled for hood fire risk

Volkswagen Recalls Over 177,000 New Atlas SUVs Due to Fire Risk

Volkswagen has issued a recall for more than 177,000 new Atlas three-row and related Atlas Cross Sport five-seat crossover SUVs due to a heightened fire risk, as revealed by the NHTSA on Monday.

The issue stems from the improper installation of the engine cover in 2024 and 2025 models, which could potentially come loose and make contact with hot surfaces, leading to melting and potentially causing a fire. Owners of affected vehicles may notice a burning smell emanating from the engine bay or observe that the engine cover is loose or misaligned when opening the hood.

The redesigned Volkswagen Atlas, introduced in 2024, competes with models such as the Mazda CX-90, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and Toyota Grand Highlander. The Atlas has undergone five recalls since its second generation was launched, with the previous recalls being less severe. The SUV has received top safety ratings, earning five stars from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS.

The solution to the recall issue is a straightforward one – dealers will remove the engine cover free of charge for affected vehicles. Vehicles manufactured after December 4, 2024, already have a new engine cover and are not included in this recall. Notification letters will be sent out to affected owners starting from April 18.

In conclusion, Volkswagen is taking proactive steps to address the potential fire risk in the Atlas SUVs, ensuring the safety of their customers. Owners are advised to pay attention to any warning signs and take their vehicles to dealerships for the necessary inspection and remedy.
