Nio Power, a subsidiary of Nio, has undergone a significant leadership change with the departure of Alan Ai as president of Onvo. Ai made the decision to step down following the underperformance of Onvo’s first model, the Onvo L60. In a statement on the Onvo App, Ai announced his resignation effective immediately, acknowledging the failure to meet sales expectations for the L60.
Replacing Ai as president of Onvo is Shen Fei, who currently serves as the head of Nio Power. Shen will report to Nio co-founder and president Qin Lihong. Additionally, Nio CFO Stanley Qu has taken on the role of head of Nio Power, overseeing all aspects of the energy business.
In his farewell message, Ai expressed regret over his team’s inability to effectively market the Onvo L60 and achieve desired sales figures. He took responsibility for the shortcomings and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to build the Onvo brand from the ground up.
Under Shen’s leadership, Onvo’s various teams, including supply chain development, product experience management, design, vehicle engineering, and quality, will report directly to Nio CEO William Li. Xia Qinghua, head of user operations and services at Onvo, along with general managers of regional companies, will report to Shen.
The change in leadership at Onvo comes as part of Nio’s ongoing organizational restructuring aimed at enhancing cost control. Nio has implemented a management mechanism called CBU (Cell Business Unit) as part of this restructuring initiative. Li has emphasized the importance of these changes in management to restore Nio’s competitive edge in the market.
Despite the challenges faced by Onvo, the company remains focused on delivering innovative electric vehicles to consumers. The upcoming launch of the Onvo L90 at the Shanghai auto show signals a new chapter for the brand. With a renewed focus on marketing strategy and user relations, Onvo aims to regain momentum and achieve its sales targets in the future.
