Stellantis has issued a global recall of 44,500 plug-in hybrid crossover SUVs due to a potential issue with the brake pedals. The affected models include the 2024-2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale and the 2024 Dodge Hornet plug-in hybrid vehicles. In the United States alone, 21,069 vehicles are being recalled, with additional vehicles being recalled in Canada, Mexico, and other international markets.
The problem stems from brake pedals that may crack under pressure, leading to potential pedal collapse when pressed. This could render the brakes unusable, posing a safety risk to drivers. In the event of brake failure, drivers can use the electronic parking brake tab on the center console to slow the vehicle. Additionally, the automatic emergency braking system will intervene if a collision is imminent.
Stellantis has identified that 5% of the recalled vehicles may have this defect, with 15 reported cases of brake pedal failure globally. While one incident resulted in a crash, thankfully, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities related to this issue. To address the problem, dealers will reinforce the brake pedal free of charge for affected owners.
Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to receive notification letters from Stellantis starting on October 24. Alternatively, they can contact Stellantis customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or visit the automaker’s recall site for more information.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale and Dodge Hornet are closely related models, both offering plug-in hybrid options in the U.S. market. The Tonale debuted as a 2024 model, coinciding with the arrival of the Dodge Hornet plug-in hybrid R/T model. Prior to the hybrid versions, a non-hybrid version of the Hornet was introduced in 2023.
As Stellantis addresses this safety concern, it underscores the importance of proactive vehicle maintenance and recalls to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers on the road.
