Why Choose a Morris Minor as Your First Car?
When it comes to choosing a first car, many factors come into play. For Ed and his son Patrick, the decision to go with a Morris Minor was not just about affordability, but also sentimental value and practicality.
Ed explains, “That’s for limited mileage, and only 1000 miles at that, but that’s adequate for us as we don’t go very far from home. And although the premium will rise once he’s passed his test, it will still be far cheaper than for a modern car.”
One of the reasons for choosing a Morris Minor was the influence of Ed’s grandfather, who had one in the past. Despite considering a Traveller initially, they settled on a saloon that was on sale for £1500 due to the poor condition of the woodwork in the Traveller.
Although the paintwork on their Morris Minor may be dull and there is some surface rust, structurally it remains sound. Additionally, the car is ULEZ-exempt, which is a significant benefit when on a tight budget.
Ed, who learned to drive at 25 in a Ford Fiesta, admits it took some time to adjust to driving the Morris Minor compared to a more modern car. On the other hand, Patrick, his son, picked it up quickly and is enjoying the experience.
Patrick shares, “Most of my friends are learning to drive, but nobody is driving a car as old as ours. They haven’t commented much on the Morris but my sister Poppy reckons that it’s a really cool car.”
