Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to launch the third-generation CLA, and it has been revealed that the new model will be powered by a 2.0T four-cylinder engine developed by Geely and Horse Powertrain Limited. Horse Powertrain Limited, a joint venture between Geely and Renault, was established on May 31, 2024. The engine is expected to deliver 250 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque.
Interestingly, while the engine is manufactured in China, the catalytic converter will be installed in Germany to comply with emission regulations. The engine is also set to be part of a 48V mild-hybrid system, featuring a gearbox-mounted integrated starter motor.
The upcoming CLA will be based on the MMA architecture and will offer both mild-hybrid and all-electric powertrains. It has been reported that there will not be a plug-in hybrid variant available. In addition to the engine from Geely, the CLA will also incorporate technology from Chinese startup Momenta for urban assisted driving capabilities.
The all-electric versions of the CLA are expected to come equipped with a 175 kW rear-mounted electric motor and an 89.6 kWh battery pack, providing a range of up to 750 km on WLTC cycle. The MMA platform will feature an 800V architecture and will be capable of gaining 400 km of range after just 15 minutes of charging.
The all-new CLA is anticipated to make its debut in 2025, with the mild-hybrid version possibly hitting the market in 2026. This collaboration between Mercedes-Benz, Geely, and Horse Powertrain Limited showcases the growing trend of international partnerships in the automotive industry to bring innovative technologies to the market.
