Introducing the Alpine A390: The Future of Electric Performance Cars
Just like the groundbreaking Tesla Model S Plaid and Maserati Granturismo Folgore, the Alpine A390 is pushing the boundaries of electric performance cars. With three motors – one at the front and two at the back – the A390 offers true torque vectoring capabilities. This advanced technology allows the A390 to overspeed the outside rear wheel, a feature that is unique to electric vehicles and sets them apart from traditional combustion-engined cars.
While the A390 shares some DNA with the Renault Scenic E-Tech, it is a distinct and unique vehicle in its own right. Even under camouflage, it’s clear that the A390 is a purpose-built electric crossover with a shorter wheelbase and a different battery setup designed to support the power outputs of its three motors.
Despite being an electric crossover, the A390 stays true to Alpine’s philosophy of lightweight performance cars. By utilizing torque vectoring and carefully tuning traction control and stability control systems, the A390 aims to capture the nimble and agile feeling of the iconic A110 sports car.
One of the standout features of the A390 is its dual rear motors, which provide superior performance and response compared to traditional setups. Additionally, having two smaller rear motors allows for a lower boot floor, enhancing practicality without compromising on performance.
Unlike other performance cars with rear-biased torque distribution, the A390 opts for equal-sized tires on all four corners. This decision not only enhances traction and stability but also simplifies the process of sourcing replacements.
Alpine has kept things simple with the A390, forgoing advanced features like four-wheel steering and opting for passive suspension for a more natural driving experience. These decisions reflect Alpine’s focus on delivering a pure and engaging driving experience.
While the official launch of the Alpine A390 is scheduled for 2026, early previews of its performance on the wet handling circuit at Michelin’s Ladoux proving ground have already generated excitement among enthusiasts. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking electric crossover.
As for the interior of the A390, details remain under wraps. However, if the design cues of the A290 and Renault Scenic are any indication, we can expect a blend of modern technology and practicality in the A390’s cabin.
