ArcBest Freight (ABF), a prominent LTL carrier, is making significant strides in its efforts to transition to zero-emission vehicles. The company recently announced plans to add five new Orange EV electric terminal tractors to its existing fleet of ZEVs, bringing the total deployment of these battery electric HDEVs to 14 and signaling a commitment to further expansion.

LTL, which stands for “Less than Truck Load,” refers to the practice of sharing the costs of shipping with other customers when the cargo does not fill a full container. This approach benefits both shippers and customers, making it a win-win scenario in the shipping industry. LTL containers account for a substantial 15% of total US shipping, underscoring the importance of adopting sustainable transportation solutions.

ABF has been utilizing Orange EV yard trucks in its LTL traffic terminals since the initial deployment of four trucks in June 2022. The company later added five more trucks and has now acquired an additional five, highlighting its confidence in the advantages of transitioning to electric power.

Matthew Godfrey, President of ABF Freight, emphasized the operational benefits of the Orange EV terminal trucks, citing their safety, reliability, and affordability. The company’s investment in electric vehicles aligns with its commitment to responsible environmental management and efforts to enhance efficiency while maintaining service excellence.

ABF’s decision to deploy Orange EV terminal trucks aligns with similar initiatives by other logistics companies, such as YMX and DHL, who have successfully integrated these vehicles into their operations. The Orange EV trucks have accumulated hundreds of thousands of hours of service, demonstrating their reliability and performance in real-world scenarios.

In a recent interview with Orange EV founder Kurt Neutgens, it was revealed that the design of the Orange EV was influenced by his experience at Ford and aimed to be cost-competitive with diesel options, even without subsidies. This commitment to affordability and sustainability has positioned Orange EV as a leader in the transition to electric yard trucks.

Overall, ABF’s investment in Orange EV electric terminal tractors represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the logistics industry. By embracing zero-emission vehicles, companies like ABF are not only reducing their environmental impact but also setting a positive example for the industry as a whole.
