Audi has made significant changes in its approach to vehicle production, shifting towards a multi-energy strategy that includes EVs, MHEVs, and PHEVs. The company CEO, Gernot Döllner, initially stated in March that Audi would phase out ICE-powered models in Europe and North America by 2033. However, the plans have evolved, and now the company is focusing on a combination of electric and hybrid vehicles, with the possibility of HEVs, FCEVs, and e-fuels in the future.
The model numbering system has also been updated, with even numbers now signifying EVs and odd numbers reserved for IC and electrified vehicles. Diesel engines are being phased out due to increasing taxation in many countries, while the range of cars, SUVs, and additional body styles continues to expand.
Looking ahead, Audi’s lineup is expected to continue growing over the next decade. In the B segment, the company may phase out the A1 small hatchback once the current generation reaches the end of its production run. The C segment will see facelifts for the A3 and A3 allstreet, extending the lifecycle of the current generation.
In the D segment, new models like the Q3 and Q3 Sportback are set to be revealed in 2025, built on the MQB Evo platform with MHEV and PHEV powertrains. The E segment will see the introduction of electric hatchbacks and estates like the A6/S6 e-tron series, powered by the PPE platform.
In the F segment, a new A8 or A9 model may arrive in 2029, following a second facelift for the existing A8 in 2025. Audi is also considering bringing back the TT in 2028 as part of a joint venture with Porsche, with an electric version planned. The future of the R8 is uncertain, with rumors of a possible PHEV model named R9.
Audi is also working on a new JV with SAIC, with plans to introduce nine electric vehicles by 2030 under the Purple project. The partnership aims to produce sub-Audi vehicles with advanced digitized platforms and CATL as the battery supplier.
Overall, Audi’s future lineup is set to be diverse and forward-thinking, embracing electric and hybrid technologies while continuing to innovate in the automotive industry.
