Audi has recently introduced a “new brand” specifically for electric vehicles in China, aptly named AUDI. This move is part of an expanded joint venture with SAIC, a long-time partner of the German automaker. The new brand is targeted towards a younger, tech-savvy demographic of Chinese EV buyers and was unveiled alongside the AUDI E electric estate concept.
Set to hit production lines in 2025, the AUDI E is just the first of three new models under the AUDI brand. Following the electric estate, a saloon and SUV are slated for release in China in 2026 and 2027, respectively. This expansion of the partnership between Audi and SAIC aims to combine Audi’s renowned design and engineering prowess with SAIC’s rapid market deployment capabilities and local expertise.
One of the most notable achievements of this partnership is the development of the first AUDI model in just 18 months, a significantly shorter timeframe compared to traditional Audi models. Audi CEO Gernot Döllner highlighted the partnership as a stepping stone towards a “new generation of advanced, intelligent vehicles” exclusive to the Chinese market. The joint platform promises cutting-edge connected vehicles tailored to the demands of Chinese consumers.
Distinct from existing Audi models, the AUDI E departs from the brand’s iconic four-ring emblem, symbolizing a fresh approach to both design and branding. Measuring 4870mm in length, 1990mm in width, and 1460mm in height, the E boasts a slightly larger footprint than the new Audi A5 Avant combustion estate. Its elongated wheelbase of 2950mm offers ample interior space and comfort for passengers.
The design of the E blends striking LED light elements with sleek, unembellished surfaces, giving it a bold and cohesive aesthetic. Built on the Advanced Digitalised Platform jointly developed by Audi and SAIC, the E features an 800V electrical architecture and a dual-motor drivetrain delivering an impressive 754bhp and up to 590lb ft of torque. Equipped with Quattro four-wheel drive and torque vectoring, the AUDI E can sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.6 seconds.
The collaboration between Audi and SAIC heralds a new era of innovative, tech-forward vehicles tailored to the evolving Chinese market. With a focus on cutting-edge technology, sleek design, and unparalleled performance, the AUDI brand is poised to capture the hearts of discerning Chinese EV enthusiasts.
