Audi Put The Windscreen Wiper And Turn Signal Controls Together. Here’s How They Work

The 2026 Audi Q3 is making waves in the automotive industry with its innovative new steering wheel design. While many automakers typically introduce new technology in their higher-end models first, Audi is breaking the mold by debuting a unique feature in its compact luxury crossover.

Gone are the conventional stalks mounted on the steering column – instead, the 2026 Q3 features a horizontal bar installed behind the wheel. But the real game-changer is the relocation of the windscreen wiper controls. No longer situated in their traditional spot, Audi has moved them to the left side of the steering wheel, where a small dial now adjusts the wipers’ intensity. A button on the outer edge of the bar activates a single sweep of the windshield, with a longer press engaging the washer.

The rear wiper is now operated by a separate button also located on the left side, with a long press triggering the washer. The turn signal controls have also been updated – now, only the tip of the bar moves up and down. Activating the high beams is as simple as pressing the outer edge of the bar, while a push toward you performs a single high-beam flash.

So, why the change? By relocating the wiper controls to the left side, Audi was able to free up space on the right side of the steering wheel for the gear selector. This clever design choice allowed for a decluttered center console, now featuring a pair of cup holders and a sliding cover that conceals dual USB-C ports and a cooled, 15-watt inductive charging pad.

While Audi’s “new steering wheel control unit” may seem a bit unconventional at first glance, it’s likely that owners will quickly adapt to the new layout. As with any innovative design, it may take some time to get used to, but the potential benefits in terms of convenience and functionality are certainly intriguing. The 2026 Audi Q3 is setting a new standard for steering wheel controls, and we can’t wait to see how this technology evolves in future models. The 2026 Audi Q3 has made headlines for its unconventional gear selector layout, featuring a horizontal bar instead of the traditional gear shifter. This new design has raised eyebrows and sparked debate among automotive enthusiasts and industry experts alike. Audi insists that this change is not just for the sake of change, but rather a strategic decision to enhance the driving experience and modernize the interior of their vehicles.

However, the question remains: what was wrong with the old layout? Conventional stalks have been a staple in cars for decades, and there have been few complaints about their functionality. The gear shifter, in particular, has been a familiar and intuitive control for drivers to operate. So why fix something that isn’t broken?

Audi’s decision to introduce a horizontal gear selector in the 2026 Q3 may be seen as a bold move to differentiate their vehicles from the competition and appeal to a younger, tech-savvy audience. The sleek and minimalist design of the new layout certainly gives the interior a more futuristic and high-tech look. It also frees up space in the center console, allowing for a cleaner and more streamlined design.

While some may argue that the traditional gear shifter was perfectly fine, Audi’s innovative approach demonstrates their commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. By embracing new technologies and design concepts, Audi is positioning itself as a leader in automotive innovation and setting a new standard for interior design.

It remains to be seen whether other Audi models will adopt this new layout in the future. Given the cost implications of implementing a new design across an entire lineup, it is likely that the horizontal gear selector will eventually make its way to other Audi vehicles. This move could further solidify Audi’s reputation as a brand that is not afraid to take risks and explore new possibilities in automotive design.

In the end, while the change may be met with some skepticism and resistance from traditionalists, Audi’s decision to introduce a horizontal gear selector in the 2026 Q3 represents a bold step towards the future of automotive design. Whether this new layout will stand the test of time and become the new standard remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Audi is not afraid to challenge convention and push the boundaries of innovation in the automotive industry.
