Baidu’s CEO recently announced a significant milestone for the company’s autonomous ride-hailing service, Apollo Go. The service has now reached a fleet of 1,000 robotaxi vehicles globally, showcasing the growth and success of the business.

During an earnings call, CEO Robin Li expressed his confidence in Apollo Go’s future profitability, emphasizing the clear path ahead. He highlighted the company’s commitment to solidifying its position as a leading autonomous ride-hailing service provider on a global scale.

In the first quarter of this year, Apollo Go provided over 1.4 million rides, marking a 75 percent year-on-year increase. This growth trajectory is a testament to the service’s popularity and efficiency among users. Additionally, as of May, Apollo Go had processed more than 11 million orders and expanded its operations to 15 cities.

Baidu first entered the autonomous driving technology sector in 2013, establishing itself as a pioneer in the field. Apart from its operations in China, Apollo Go is actively expanding into international markets. The service recently launched in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, conducting road verification tests in Dubai in May.

Moreover, Apollo Go obtained permits in Hong Kong last November to pilot robotaxis in designated areas. Subsequently, the service received approval to conduct open-road testing with passengers in Hong Kong, marking a significant milestone for its presence in right-hand drive markets.

Looking ahead, Baidu plans to introduce Apollo Go in Switzerland, with the intention of establishing a local company in the region. The company aims to replicate its successful business model in international markets, leveraging its experience in complex traffic environments and catering to cost-sensitive passengers.

CEO Robin Li expressed optimism about Apollo Go’s future, foreseeing profitability as costs decrease and operational efficiency improves with scale. He emphasized the service’s role as a key driver of Baidu’s long-term growth, highlighting its potential to contribute significantly to the company’s success.

Overall, Baidu’s Apollo Go has made substantial progress in the autonomous ride-hailing space, positioning itself as a leading player in the industry. With a focus on expansion and innovation, the service is poised for continued success in both domestic and international markets.
