Believe it or not, more Amish are jumping on e-bikes than ever

The Amish community, known for their rejection of modern technology, has begun to embrace a surprising new mode of transportation: electric bicycles. In regions such as Iowa, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, Amish individuals can be seen riding e-bikes alongside traditional horse and buggies. While this may seem contradictory to their beliefs, many Amish communities are finding that e-bikes align with their values of self-sufficiency and community reliance.

Unlike some Amish groups that completely eschew electricity, others have adopted solar power as a means of generating their own electricity within the community. This self-sustaining approach has opened the door for the acceptance of electric bicycles, which can be charged using locally generated solar power. This shift towards e-bikes has been fueled by the practicality and convenience they offer compared to traditional modes of transportation like horse-drawn buggies.

In some communities, e-bike workshops have sprung up, with Amish individuals building and customizing their own electric bicycles. E-bike shops that cater to the Amish population have also seen a rise in demand for these eco-friendly and efficient vehicles. David Mullet, a member of the Old Order Amish Church and owner of E-bikes of Holmes County in Ohio, emphasized the speed and convenience of e-bikes over horse-drawn vehicles for daily commuting.

While the acceptance of e-bikes varies among different Amish communities, some see them as a practical solution for commuting and maintaining their values of community and self-reliance. However, there are dissenting voices within the community who fear the impact of modern technology on Amish culture. Despite these disagreements, e-bikes have carved out a niche as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly mode of transportation for some Amish individuals.

In a world where technology often complicates our lives, the Amish community’s embrace of electric bicycles illustrates that the right tool, when used thoughtfully, can simplify and enhance daily living. While not every Amish group has embraced e-bikes, the growing acceptance of this modern technology among some communities showcases the adaptability and pragmatism of the Amish way of life.
