Is the BMW 3 Series Touring a Reliable Choice for Your Next Car?

When it comes to reliability, the BMW 3 Series Touring is a solid option as long as it is properly maintained with regular servicing and repairs.

In a Reliability Survey conducted by What Car?, the diesel version of the 3 Series Touring ranked impressively, coming in fourth out of 24 cars in the executive car class with a stellar score of 96.5%. The petrol models also fared well, achieving a slightly lower score of 92%.

While the 3 Series Touring is not without its issues, parts are readily available, and there is a network of dealers and independent specialists to assist with any necessary repairs.

Engine Concerns: Early models with the ‘M47’ four-cylinder diesel engine may experience issues with the timing chain stretching or snapping. Keep an ear out for any unusual noises on start-up. Additionally, check for oil leaks from the rocker covers and monitor the diesel particulate filter (DPF) for potential clogging.

Gearbox and Drivetrain: Look out for warning signs such as vibrations or juddering, as these could indicate potential issues with the gearbox or dual-mass flywheel. For xDrive 4WD models, be wary of oil leaks or juddering, which may point to a failing transfer box.

Electrical and Body Concerns: Keep an eye on the FRM module, which controls various functions like headlights and central locking, as well as the air conditioning system. Address any issues with the fuel flap solenoid promptly to prevent any inconvenience.

Insight from an Owner

Perdeep Singh Thiara: As a proud owner of an F31 335d for over five years, Perdeep shares his experience with the vehicle’s performance and maintenance. He highlights the importance of regular servicing for key components like the gearbox, differential, and transfer box to ensure optimal performance.

Additional Information

When browsing for a BMW 3 Series Touring, you’ll come across various trims, including SE, Sport, Luxury, and M Sport. Each version is equipped with BMW’s user-friendly iDrive infotainment system, making navigation a breeze.

Consider exploring previously used police cars, which can offer great value for money. While some may show signs of wear and tear, you may find a well-maintained gem like a 330d with a new engine installed by BMW at a competitive price.
