BMW is gearing up to launch the next-generation 3 Series, with a twist – the model will be available as a fully electric vehicle for the first time. This electric version will be sold alongside a gas-powered variant, offering customers a choice between traditional combustion engines and cutting-edge electric technology. The sedan is set to be revealed shortly after the debut of the iX3 electric SUV in September, marking a significant step forward in BMW’s electrification efforts.
Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW Group’s design chief, recently spoke about the resurgence of wagons in the automotive market. He pointed to the growing popularity of models like the M3 Touring and M5 Touring, even in countries where wagons are not typically in demand. Van Hooydonk expressed his enthusiasm for the “new wind in that segment,” suggesting that BMW sees a bright future for wagons in its lineup.
While BMW has only showcased the next-generation 3 Series as a sedan so far, there have been hints about a potential wagon variant. The focus has largely been on the next-gen M3 Touring, which could potentially make its way to the US market. Andreas Meyer, BMW’s vice president of product management, indicated that the success of the M5 Touring in the US would influence the decision to bring the M3 Touring stateside. The strong demand for the M5 wagon has given BMW hope for the future of wagons in the American market.
It remains to be seen how the 3 Series Touring will fit into BMW’s electrification strategy. There are rumors that the company is working on a wagon variant, with speculation that it could revive the i3 nameplate for this model. With SUVs accounting for only half of BMW’s sales, there is still a significant market for wagons, sedans, and coupes among customers.
The big question now is whether BMW will offer the wagon version of the 3 Series in the US. While details remain scarce, there is a sense of anticipation surrounding the potential arrival of a 3 Series Touring model in the American market. As BMW continues to expand its electric lineup and cater to diverse customer preferences, the introduction of a fully electric 3 Series wagon could be a game-changer for the brand.
