The BMW Group is taking steps to enhance digitalization in its component production, with the Landshut plant leading the way by utilizing AI-supported data analysis to detect anomalies and prevent cyberattacks. This innovative approach is part of the company’s efforts to improve productivity and quality through digital process control and networked production facilities.

Thomas Thym, the head of BMW Group Plant Landshut, emphasized the importance of actively shaping technical progress to secure long-term competitiveness. The plant is at the forefront of BMW’s digitalization strategy, which includes the “Shopfloor.Digital” transformation program aimed at harmonizing manufacturing processes and IT systems across all production sites globally.

The company is developing a cloud-based IT architecture, leveraging process automation and AI solutions, with the Landshut plant playing a vital role in this transformation. Franz Heigl, head of digitalization of component manufacturing at BMW, highlighted the company’s view of complexity as an opportunity to continuously improve processes using data insights.

BMW is also advancing digitalization in lean management approaches, incorporating digital process maps, digital disruption processes, and value stream management. This initiative extends to logistics and manufacturing, where sensors, real-time data, and AI-driven processes optimize supply chains, material flows, and production processes.

At the Landshut plant, automation and digitalization are key in cockpit production, with around 50 quality features checked in just 30 seconds during final quality control. Automated packaging and transport using autonomous systems further streamline processes without external control.

As BMW continues to drive digitalization in its operations, the company aims to prevent bottlenecks, conserve resources, and improve overall efficiency. The integration of digital technologies with traditional manufacturing processes is a testament to BMW’s commitment to innovation and excellence in the automotive industry.
