BMW M Engines to Meet Euro 7 Emissions Regulations with No Loss of Performance

BMW M’s iconic straight-six and V8 engines are set to conquer the challenges of the upcoming Euro 7 emissions regulations without compromising on performance, according to the division’s CEO.

While the emissions standards themselves remain similar to the current Euro 6e regulations, the testing protocols are becoming more rigorous. Vehicles must now comply with emissions standards over a wider range of driving scenarios, mirroring real-world conditions. Additionally, the engines must remain compliant for an extended period of 10 years or 124,000 miles, double the current requirement. The new regulations will also monitor brake and tyre emissions for the first time.

Speaking at the renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed, BMW M CEO Frank van Meel emphasized the importance of maintaining performance while meeting the stringent Euro 7 emissions standards. He highlighted the need to optimize the combustion process to manage heat buildup without compromising on power output.

Van Meel hinted at some innovative adjustments made to the engines to achieve compliance with the new regulations while preserving performance levels. While he did not delve into specifics, he assured that BMW M has implemented intriguing modifications that will be unveiled in the near future.

Despite the possibility of downsizing to smaller three- or four-cylinder engines with increased electrification to reduce emissions, Van Meel firmly dismissed the idea for BMW M. He stressed that such powertrains would not align with the division’s performance-oriented philosophy, particularly in terms of torque delivery, rev ranges, and vehicle weight. Van Meel expressed his reluctance to envision a scenario where a four-cylinder engine powers an M5 sedan.

BMW M remains committed to its heritage of utilizing the revered six-cylinder in-line and V8 engines, both of which have a rich racing pedigree. Van Meel affirmed the division’s dedication to these powerplants, emphasizing their integral role in delivering the driving experience synonymous with BMW M vehicles.
