BMW reveals radical panoramic iDrive system for Neue Klasse cars

BMW has unveiled its innovative Panoramic iDrive system, set to revolutionize the dashboard of all future models. The cutting-edge interface was showcased at the prestigious CES tech event in Las Vegas and will debut in the upcoming Neue Class X electric SUV before being rolled out across BMW’s electric and combustion lineup.

The Panoramic iDrive interior concept consists of four main components, with the centerpiece being a striking display that spans the width of the windscreen. This display presents essential driving information directly in front of the driver, accompanied by six customizable ‘particle’ slots for additional data.

Positioned centrally is a touchscreen that is angled towards the driver, running on BMW’s new Operating System X software. Developed in-house and based on Android code, OS X represents a significant leap forward from the previous OS 9. The touchscreen is designed for touch and voice control, with the ability to receive over-the-air software updates for continuous improvement.

Gone are the physical buttons of old, with BMW opting for a more streamlined and intuitive approach. The system is complemented by a new steering wheel featuring haptic buttons that illuminate when specific functions are available, providing tactile feedback to the driver.

An optional 3D head-up display (HUD) completes the setup, projecting key information into the driver’s line of sight above the Panoramic Vision strip. The integration of these elements ensures a cohesive user experience, with the HUD working in tandem with the Panoramic Display to provide comprehensive driving information.

Christian Bauer, BMW’s vice-president of user interface design, shed some light on the design decisions behind the new system. The closer placement of the screen to the driver enhances ergonomics, while the angled orientation allows for a more natural interaction without compromising visibility. The horizontal layout was chosen to promote driver safety and ensure that essential information is easily accessible without causing distractions.

Overall, BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system represents a bold step forward in automotive technology, blending cutting-edge design with user-friendly functionality. As the system is gradually implemented across BMW’s lineup, drivers can look forward to a more intuitive and immersive driving experience.
