BMW Focusing on Improving Lithium Ion Batteries Over Solid-State Technology
BMW is not shifting its focus to solid-state battery technology in the near future, as it believes there is still significant room for improvement with today’s lithium ion batteries.
Solid-state batteries are often touted as the next big advancement in electric vehicle (EV) technology due to their higher capacity and longer range capabilities compared to traditional lithium ion batteries. These batteries are also lighter, less affected by temperature changes, and can be charged more quickly.
Despite competitors like Mercedes-Benz claiming to be on the cusp of implementing solid-state batteries, BMW’s vice-president of next-generation battery tech, Martin Schuster, estimates that it will be around eight years before the BMW Group considers incorporating solid-state batteries into its EV lineup.
Schuster emphasized the ongoing improvements in lithium ion battery technology, stating that there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to batteries. He believes that the focus should be on enhancing lithium ion batteries to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
Joachim Post, BMW Group’s purchasing and supply boss, highlighted the capabilities of the company’s new ‘Gen6’ batteries, which can provide up to 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging. He questioned whether customers would be willing to pay a premium for slightly faster charging speeds offered by solid-state batteries, considering cost is a major factor for EV buyers.
Post explained that the challenge with solid-state batteries lies in mass-producing cells at a low cost without compromising efficiency or quality. He expressed confidence in BMW’s Gen6 batteries, stating that they will continue to meet market demands effectively.
Addressing concerns about falling behind competitors like Mercedes-Benz, who are testing their own solid-state batteries with a range exceeding 600 miles, Schuster emphasized the importance of competitiveness in pricing. He noted that until solid-state batteries can rival the cost-effectiveness of lithium ion batteries, BMW will remain focused on improving existing technology.
