The Future of BMW: New Electric Cars Set to Debut at Munich Motor Show

The next era of BMW is set to begin in September, with the highly anticipated unveiling of the first Neue Klasse electric car, the iX3 SUV, at the prestigious Munich motor show. This groundbreaking new model, previewed last year by the bold Neue Klasse Vision X concept, will mark the beginning of a new family of EVs from BMW.

Riding on the Gen6 platform, the iX3 promises significant improvements in range, functionality, and cost. It is expected to hit the roads in 2026, going head-to-head with rivals such as the Audi Q6 E-tron, Polestar 3, and the upcoming electric Mercedes-Benz GLC.

Following closely behind the iX3 will be an electric BMW 3 Series saloon, inspired by the striking Neue Klasse concept. While an official unveiling date has yet to be confirmed, mules for both models are currently undergoing hot weather testing in South Africa.

BMW has revealed that the Gen6 platform will feature 800V electrical hardware for rapid charging, along with batteries that are 20% more energy-dense than current packs. This advancement is expected to increase range by up to 30% and improve efficiency by 20%. The platform will also house a new generation of lighter and more efficient electric motors, capable of accommodating up to four in the most powerful BMW EVs.

Despite the introduction of these new electric models, the combustion-engined BMW X3 will continue to be available alongside the iX3. The fourth generation of the popular SUV, launched last year, offers a range of powertrain options including petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid.
