Luca de Meo Steps Down as CEO of Renault Group
After five years at the helm, Luca de Meo has announced his decision to step down as the CEO of Renault Group. The Italian executive, who previously held leadership positions at Seat-Cupra, joined Renault five years ago and wasted no time in implementing the ambitious Renaulution business plan. This plan included the introduction of the electric Renault 5, a lineup of new SUVs, and the transformation of Alpine into an electric performance brand, all of which helped revitalize the company’s fortunes.
Renault Group released a statement confirming de Meo’s departure, citing his desire to pursue new challenges outside the automotive sector. The board has agreed that he will officially leave his position on July 15, but he will continue in his role until then. The search for a new group CEO has already begun based on the existing succession plan.
Reflecting on his time at Renault, de Meo stated, “There comes a time in one’s life when one knows the job is done.” He expressed confidence in the company’s future, highlighting the strong team, agile organization, and strategic plan in place for the next generation of products. De Meo emphasized that he is leaving behind a transformed company that is well-positioned for the future.
Renault Group chairman Jean-Dominique Senard praised de Meo as “an exceptional captain of industry” and thanked him for his contributions to the company’s success over the years. De Meo, who was awarded the prestigious Issigonis Trophy at the 2024 Autocar Awards, leaves behind a legacy of innovation and strategic vision.
Despite rumors linking him to the role of Stellantis CEO, which was recently filled by Antonio Filosa, de Meo had previously denied any intention of leaving Renault. He had expressed his commitment to the company and the work that still needed to be done. In addition to his role at Renault, de Meo has also served as president of the ACEA, where he advocated for the development of small European city cars to compete with cheaper Chinese alternatives.
As de Meo prepares to transition to new opportunities, Renault Group will now focus on finding a successor to continue the company’s growth and innovation in the automotive industry.
