Buick, a brand under General Motors (NYSE: GM), is making adjustments to its product plan as it prepares to launch a new model in China. The upcoming model, codenamed NDLB, was initially set to be offered as a battery electric vehicle (BEV) only. However, in response to local consumer preferences, Buick has decided to include extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) options as well.
According to a report from AutoPix, the decision to add EREV variants to the NDLB model has prompted a restructuring of the vehicle’s architecture. The original plan to use GM’s VIP (Vehicle Intelligence Platform) has been replaced with SAIC-GM’s CLEA (China Local Electronic Architecture) to accommodate both pure electric and EREV powertrains.
The NDLB model is based on the Electra-L, an all-electric concept car showcased by SAIC-GM at the Beijing auto show earlier this year. This mid-size flagship sedan is positioned as Buick’s most high-end all-electric model to date. Originally slated for release in the first half of 2025, the production timeline has been pushed back to early 2026 due to the architectural changes.
In addition to introducing EREV options, Buick’s restructuring program for the NDLB model aims to replace the VIP architecture with the more cost-effective CLEA architecture. This decision aligns with SAIC-GM’s shift towards a more flexible product strategy tailored to the Chinese market.
SAIC-GM, GM’s joint venture in China, has seen a decline in sales in recent years, prompting a reevaluation of its product and marketing strategies. While the company continues to focus on electrification, there have been challenges in effectively positioning high-end EV models in the market.
Despite the sales decline, SAIC-GM remains committed to its electrification transition strategy, albeit with some adjustments to better suit the Chinese market. The NDLB model’s shift to include EREV options and adopt the CLEA architecture reflects SAIC-GM’s evolving approach to product development and consumer engagement.
As Buick prepares to launch the NDLB model with a mix of BEV and EREV variants, the brand aims to offer a compelling electric vehicle option that meets the diverse needs of Chinese consumers. The revised product plan underscores Buick’s commitment to innovation and adaptability in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
