BYD Sets Sights on Land Rover Defender with New B5 SUV

BYD is making waves in the UK automotive market with the upcoming launch of the B5 SUV, a premium range-extender 4×4 that is set to rival the iconic Land Rover Defender. Originally known as the Bao 5 when it was introduced in China last year, this new model is part of BYD’s SUV sub-brand, Fangchengbao, which is gearing up to make a splash in the UK market.

The B5 is expected to be rebranded as Denza in the UK, positioning it as a luxurious sibling to the Denza Z9 GT shooting brake. Both models are set to debut at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed, with sales scheduled to kick off in 2026.

This move marks BYD’s strategic decision to diversify its powertrain offerings and cater to new market segments. The company’s president, Stella Li, expressed confidence in the popularity of the Fangchengbao SUVs in the UK, citing the country’s love for large off-road vehicles despite its narrow roads.

While specific details about the B5’s specifications have not been officially confirmed, it is anticipated that the UK version will closely mirror the Chinese model. The B5 utilizes a ‘DMO Super-Hybrid Off-Road’ ladder-frame platform and features a range-extender system that combines a 1.5-litre turbo engine with electric motors on each axle, delivering an impressive 677bhp and 561lb ft of torque.

Equipped with a substantial 31.8kWh battery, the B5 boasts a claimed EV range of up to 78 miles on China’s CLTC cycle, making it a formidable contender in the hybrid SUV segment. This model is part of BYD’s broader strategy to expand its hybrid car lineup amidst evolving trends in the European EV market.

In addition to the B5, BYD is also gearing up to introduce the Seal 06 next year, a plug-in hybrid saloon/estate designed to rival the likes of the BMW 3 Series. The Denza Z9 GT will offer a PHEV variant with an impressive combined range, as well as a pure-electric option for eco-conscious consumers.

At the Goodwood Festival, BYD will showcase the Denza D9 MPV, a luxurious people carrier that promises a “business-class” experience akin to the Lexus LM. With these innovative models on the horizon, BYD is poised to make a significant impact on the UK automotive scene, offering consumers a compelling blend of performance, efficiency, and luxury.
