The BYD Dolphin has made history by becoming the safest car in Latin America, achieving a five-star rating in the Latin NCAP crash and safety test. This electric hatchback is also the first battery electric vehicle to receive a five-star rating in Latin NCAP’s history.
The BYD Dolphin, originally launched in China in 2021, made its way to Latin America in 2023 and quickly became a popular choice in Brazil. Prior to its Latin NCAP evaluation, the European version of the BYD Dolphin had already earned five stars in both Euro NCAP and Australian NCAP crash tests. The Latin NCAP evaluation in December solidified the BYD Dolphin as the safest Chinese car to be assessed by the organization.
Safety Features of the BYD Dolphin
The BYD Dolphin model evaluated by Latin NCAP comes equipped with 7 airbags and a standard Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) package. The car’s body is constructed with high-strength steel, making up 78.2% of its structure. These safety features played a significant role in the car achieving the highest safety rating in the New Car Assessment Program.
In the Latin NCAP evaluation, the BYD Dolphin excelled in the Child Occupant safety segment with a score of 93.17% and scored 92.6% in the Adult Safety category. The car also performed well in the Pedestrian Protection and Vulnerable Road Users safety categories, achieving scores of 77.03% and 85.17%, respectively.
The ADAS package of the BYD Dolphin was thoroughly assessed in various impact scenarios, including frontal impact, side impact, side pole impact, whiplash, pedestrian protection, ESC, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Support Systems (LSS), Speed Assist Systems (SAS), and Blind Spot Detection. The car’s overall performance in these tests contributed to its five-star safety rating.
Latin NCAP representatives praised the BYD Dolphin for its stable structure, good protection in impact scenarios, and the inclusion of standard ADAS features across all units of the model.
