The A-segment EV market has seen a few attempts at affordable options in the past, with models like the Dacia Spring and Leapmotor T03 providing decent but somewhat cheap-feeling results. However, the Surf aims to change this perception by offering a car that feels like a ‘proper’ vehicle while remaining competitively priced.
Built on the same e-Platform 3.0 as the impressive BYD Seal electric saloon, the Surf incorporates cutting-edge Blade Battery technology from BYD. This technology is known for its safety and durability, as well as its lack of rare cobalt. The Surf also features BYD’s ‘eight-in-one’ electric powertrain, which combines various components to improve efficiency and save space.
The Surf comes with two battery options: a 30kWh and a 43.2kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery. The smaller battery is paired with an 87bhp motor in the Active model, providing a 137-mile range and an 11.1 second 0-62mph time. The larger battery is available in the Boost model, offering a 200-mile range with a 12.1 second 0-62mph time. There is also a Comfort model with a 193-mile range and a 9.1 second 0-62mph time, thanks to a 154bhp motor.
In terms of range, the Surf outperforms the Dacia Spring and Leapmotor T03, and is comparable to models like the Citroen ë-C3. Despite this, the Surf is priced similarly to the former rather than the latter.
Inside, the Surf offers a more premium feel compared to the T03, with features like an Apple CarPlay-equipped touchscreen, soft materials, and faux-leather sports seats. Standard equipment includes 15-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, a parking camera, keyless entry, and adaptive cruise control.
Upgrading to the Boost model adds larger 16-inch alloy wheels, electric seat adjustment, and automatic wipers. The Comfort model includes a 360-degree camera, LED headlights, tinted rear windows, heated front seats, and a wireless phone charging pad.
Overall, the Surf aims to provide a high-quality driving experience at an affordable price point, making it a compelling option in the A-segment EV market.
