BYD Introduces New Electric Pickup, the BYD Shark, in Cambodia
On October 26th, BYD made a significant move by launching its latest electric pickup truck, the BYD Shark, in Cambodia. Known locally as the BYD Shark 6, this innovative vehicle is priced at around 56,700 USD, making it an attractive option for eco-conscious consumers.
This launch event marked the first time the BYD Shark is being introduced in an Asian market. Previously, the hybrid pickup made its debut in Mexico in May of this year and has since been made available in Brazil, Mexico, Panama, and soon in Australia.
Partnering with Harmony Auto, the exclusive distributor of BYD vehicles in Cambodia, BYD is offering attractive incentives for prospective buyers. These incentives include a $500 gas card, 3 years of free maintenance up to 50,000 km, a 7 kW charger, and an 8-year or 160,000 km warranty for every 1000 USD deposit.
During the launch event, BYD highlighted the Shark’s VTOL (Vehicle to Load) capability, allowing the vehicle to power external devices such as camping equipment, emergency power sources, and household appliances.
The BYD Shark is built on BYD’s DMO platform, which prioritizes energy efficiency and offers real off-road capabilities by adjusting torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. With dimensions of 5457/1971/1925 mm and a wheelbase of 3260 mm, the pickup can carry a payload of up to 835 kg (1,841 lb) and has a bed volume of 1,450 liters (51.2 cubic feet). Additionally, it boasts a towing capacity of 2,500 kg (5,512 lb).
Under the hood, the BYD Shark is equipped with a 1.5T engine delivering a maximum power of 170 kW. The front motor generates 170 kW power and 310 Nm peak torque, while the rear motor outputs 150 kW and 340 Nm torque. The combined system output is 320 kW and 650 Nm of torque.
The truck comes with a 29.58 kWh lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery, providing a range of 100 km on pure electric mode (NEDC standard) and 840 km with a full battery and tank.
While the BYD Shark is not yet available in China due to restrictions on pickup trucks in Chinese cities, it has been successfully launched in multiple countries this year. The model is set to hit the Australian market on October 29th, with deliveries expected by the end of the year.
