BYD officially announces plans to bring its high-end Yangwang brand to the European market, marking a significant milestone for the Chinese automaker. The Yangwang brand, positioned above BYD’s core lineup and the premium Denza brand, offers a range of technologically advanced, high-performance flagship models that compete with renowned luxury brands such as Bentley, Porsche, and Ferrari.
The brand made its debut in 2023 with the launch of the Yangwang U8, a luxurious range-extender SUV boasting over 1000bhp, impressive agility with a 360-degree turning capability, and even the ability to float on water. Following the U8, BYD introduced the U9, an electric supercar capable of reaching speeds of 240mph and showcasing unique features like hydraulic suspension for jumping and driving on three wheels.
While both models have been available in China for the past two years at prices equivalent to £120,000 and £200,000 respectively, BYD had not confirmed its plans for a European release until now. Vice President Stella Li revealed that the company is set to introduce the Yangwang brand to Europe, with the U8 and U9 models confirmed for the market. Additionally, Li hinted at the arrival of more vehicles, including the U7 super-saloon, a powerful quad-motor sedan rivaling the Lotus Emeya with 1250bhp and a 0-62mph time of 2.9 seconds.
This move positions BYD as the first Chinese manufacturer to enter Europe’s luxury market, although pricing details remain uncertain. Converting the Yangwang models to right-hand drive and navigating the 17% tariff on EVs in Europe may result in premium pricing compared to the Chinese market. Nonetheless, BYD’s entry into the European luxury segment signifies the brand’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement.
With BYD’s expansion into Europe on the horizon, automotive enthusiasts can look forward to experiencing the cutting-edge technology and performance capabilities of the Yangwang brand firsthand. Stay tuned for more updates on the arrival of these exceptional vehicles in the European market.
