Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil giant of Saudi Arabia, has recently announced a partnership with BYD, a leading Chinese NEV manufacturer. The collaboration aims to promote the development of innovative technologies in the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector.
The joint development agreement signed between Saudi Aramco and BYD will leverage the R&D teams of both companies to achieve breakthroughs in NEV technologies. The focus of the partnership is on enhancing efficiency and environmental performance in the NEV sector.
Ali A. Al-Meshari, the senior vice president of technology oversight & coordination at Saudi Aramco, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that it aims to support improvements and build on the company’s extensive R&D experience in new energy solutions. On the other hand, Luo Hongbin, BYD’s senior vice president, highlighted the cutting-edge R&D capabilities of both companies in NEVs and their potential to incubate solutions with high efficiency performance and a low carbon footprint.
The collaboration comes at a time when the Saudi government has set ambitious targets for electrification, aiming for 30 percent of NEVs by 2030. BYD officially entered the Saudi Arabian market in February 2024, introducing a range of NEVs including the Han EV, Atto 3, Seal EV, Qin Plus, and Song Plus. The company’s first store in Saudi Arabia opened in Riyadh in May 2024, signaling its commitment to expanding its presence in the Middle Eastern country.
BYD has seen significant growth in NEV sales, with a total of 1,000,804 units sold globally in the first quarter of this year, marking a 59.81 percent increase year-on-year. In overseas markets, BYD sold 206,084 NEVs in the same period, reflecting a 110.51 percent growth compared to the previous year.
The partnership between Saudi Aramco and BYD underscores the growing importance of collaboration in advancing sustainable transportation solutions. With Saudi Arabia’s push towards electrification and BYD’s expertise in NEV technologies, the joint efforts of these two industry leaders are poised to drive innovation and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in the region.
