BYD Introduces Next-Generation Plug-In Hybrids with Impressive Electric Range

BYD is gearing up to launch a new range of plug-in hybrids that boast a remarkable electric-only range of 200km (124 miles) and the ability to rapid-charge at speeds exceeding 150kW. Expected to hit the market within the next one to two years, these new PHEVs from the Chinese automaker, known as DM-i, will outperform their competitors in terms of electric range.

Currently, the longest electric range offered by any PHEV in the UK market is 88 miles, found in the Volkswagen Golf eHybrid. BYD’s best offering, the Seal U, provides a range of 77 miles but can only be charged at 18kW.

Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice-president, emphasized the company’s goal of encouraging daily use of the EV mode while also providing the flexibility for long-distance travel when needed. The DM-i system combines BYD’s innovative Blade Battery technology with the Xiaoyun petrol engine, specifically designed for PHEV applications and boasting world-leading thermal efficiency.

According to Alfredo Altavilla, BYD’s special advisor for Europe, the rise of PHEVs has made it a new battleground for manufacturers, especially with evolving green legislation. Altavilla believes that BYD is in a prime position to capitalize on the changing market landscape with its superior DM-i technology.

While other manufacturers like Ford, Leapmotor, Lotus, and Volkswagen are exploring range-extender (REx) cars, BYD maintains that PHEVs offer a more versatile driving experience with three different modes of operation.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how BYD’s advanced plug-in hybrid technology sets the standard for green vehicles in the future.
