BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle and battery manufacturer, has recently signed a significant agreement with Spain’s Grenergy to provide an additional 3.5 GWh of energy storage systems for the Oasis Atacama project in Chile. This project is considered one of the largest electrochemical energy storage projects in the world.
The agreement between BYD Energy Storage and Grenergy marks a new milestone in the supply of energy storage solutions in Latin America. BYD Energy Storage, a business unit of BYD, will supply 624 units of its MC Cube-T BESS for the Elena project, a crucial component of Oasis Atacama. This project consists of 446 MW of PV capacity and 3.5 GWh of storage capacity.
The MC Cube-T BESS is a cutting-edge energy storage system that integrates BYD’s innovative blade batteries, resulting in a 98 percent improvement in space utilization. This advanced technology allows for efficient storage and utilization of renewable energy, contributing to a more sustainable energy ecosystem.
With this latest agreement, the total storage capacity of Oasis Atacama will reach up to 11 GWh, solidifying its position as a global benchmark for clean energy supply. David Ruiz de Andrés, CEO of Grenergy, emphasized the significance of Oasis Atacama in meeting the growing demand for reliable and sustainable energy solutions.
BYD’s continuous investment in battery technology and energy storage solutions has positioned the company as a key player in the global market. In the first quarter of this year, BYD ranked as the top global battery electric vehicle (BEV) maker with a 15.4 percent market share, according to TrendForce. This achievement reflects BYD’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the automotive and energy sectors.
Overall, the collaboration between BYD Energy Storage and Grenergy signifies a significant step towards advancing clean energy technologies and addressing the challenges of climate change. As the world transitions towards a more sustainable future, partnerships like this will play a crucial role in shaping the energy landscape and ensuring a cleaner, greener planet for future generations.
