BYD Reports Strong Electric Vehicle Sales in January
BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, announced that it sold 300,538 electric vehicles in January. This figure represents a 47.5% increase compared to the same month last year. However, sales were down by 41.8% from December 2024.
Breaking down the numbers, BYD sold 125,377 battery electric vehicles (BEV), marking a 19.1% increase from January 2024. BEV sales accounted for 42.3% of the total sales, a decrease of 9.9 percentage points from the previous year.
Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales were even more impressive, reaching 171,069 units, up by 78.7% from January 2024. PHEV sales made up 57.7% of BYD’s total sales, increasing by 10.1 percentage points from last year.

Out of the total sales, 296,446 units were passenger vehicles, while 4,092 were commercial vehicles and buses. BYD also reported that it produced 327,864 vehicles in January, a 49.1% increase from the previous year.

Furthermore, BYD installed 15.511 GWh of battery capacity into its electric vehicles. The company also saw a significant increase in exports, with 66,336 units shipped out in January, setting a new monthly record.
BYD’s sales data include vehicles from its subbrands Denza, Fang Cheng Bao, and Yangwang. Yangwnag sold 286 vehicles in January, while Fang Cheng Bao sold 6,219 vehicles, and Denza sold 11,720 vehicles.
BYD’s flagship models from the Dynasty and Ocean series performed exceptionally well, with sales reaching 278,221 units, a 50.3% increase from the previous year. Overall, BYD has sold a cumulative total of 10.9 million electric vehicles.
The dip in January sales and the spike in exports can be attributed to the Chinese New Year holiday. The holiday period started on January 27 and will end on February 4, resulting in lower sales during the last week of January. Business is expected to resume as usual on February 10.
BYD is not only expanding its export market from China but also establishing EV plants in other countries. Last year, the company completed an EV plant in Thailand with an annual capacity of 150,000 units. By the end of 2025, BYD plans to finish another plant in Indonesia with the same capacity, further solidifying its presence in the global electric vehicle market.
