BYD’s Denza Brand Targets Porsche with 952bhp Z9 GT Flagship

Chinese electric car giant BYD is set to make its mark in Europe with the introduction of its premium Denza brand. The brand will launch its flagship model, the Z9 GT, a bold electric and PHEV-powered grand tourer that is set to rival the likes of Porsche in the European market.

The Z9 GT will be the first model to hit European shores, boasting an impressive 952bhp in its electric form. Following the Z9 GT, Denza will introduce a seven-seat MPV called the D9. The launch of Denza in Europe marks a significant step for BYD as it seeks to establish a separate dealer network and marketing operation for the brand.

Denza’s marketing tagline, ‘Technology drives elegance’, highlights the brand’s commitment to offering cutting-edge technology and European-inspired design elements in its lineup. With plans to introduce four to six models in Europe, including SUVs and off-roaders, Denza aims to capture the attention of brand-focused premium customers in the region.

The Z9 GT is a Porsche Taycan and Panamera competitor, featuring an advanced platform called e3 specifically developed for Denza. The electric version of the Z9 GT boasts a combined output of 952bhp, with a 0-62mph time of 3.4 seconds and a range of 391 miles on the Chinese test cycle. The PHEV variant, known as the Super DM, offers a system output of 858bhp and a range of 684 miles.

Designed by former Audi designer Wolfgang Egger, the Z9 GT features a sleek shooting brake design with advanced technology such as an 800V electrical architecture for fast charging and a cell-to-body battery integration for increased rigidity. The platform allows for enhanced vehicle stability and innovative features like rear-wheel steering and ‘crab walk’ functionality for tight parking spaces.

Denza’s history dates back to 2010 when it was established as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz’s parent company, Daimler. After BYD acquired full control of the brand in 2021, Denza has undergone a revitalization, offering a range of models on the advanced e3 platform. The brand’s name, an acronym reflecting its values, signifies its commitment to diversity, elegance, novelty, zenith, and aspiration.

With the launch of the Z9 GT and future models like the D9, Denza is set to make a strong impression in the European market, challenging established premium brands with its combination of innovative technology, elegant design, and superior performance.
