Cadillac CT sedans, Chevy Camaro recalled for bad transmission

General Motors has issued a recall for 90,081 Cadillac sedans and Chevy Camaro coupes due to a faulty valve in the 10-speed automatic transmission. This issue, as disclosed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Monday, could potentially cause the wheels to lock up over time.

The problem stems from a specific transmission control valve that is unique to the 10-speed automatic. As these valves wear excessively, it can lead to a loss of pressure within the valve, resulting in harsh shifting or, in rare cases, momentary wheel lock. The affected vehicles include GM cars equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission only.

Although the recalled vehicles are rear-wheel-drive, Cadillacs can also have all-wheel drive, making the wheel lock issue applicable to both front and rear wheels. In some instances, drivers experienced both front wheels locking up while driving, causing the transmission to default to neutral, ultimately leading to the replacement of the engine and front differential.

Affected drivers will be reimbursed for any out-of-pocket expenses incurred for this issue. GM has received 115 reports of wheel lock and one reported crash related to this problem. The remedy for this recall involves installing new transmission control module software that will monitor valve performance and detect excess wear approximately 10,000 miles before a potential wheel lock occurs. Once excessive wear is detected, the transmission will be limited to fifth gear until the next engine start, which may indicate potential long-term engine issues.

Owners can expect to receive notification by mail starting from April 21, but the fix will be rolled out in phases, so some vehicles may not have the remedy available immediately. They will be required to visit a GM service center for the transmission module installation. For further information or inquiries, Cadillac customers can contact customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customers at 1-800-222-1020, or visit GM’s recall site for updates.

The recall highlights the importance of addressing potential safety issues promptly to ensure the well-being of drivers and passengers. Keeping up with manufacturer recalls and addressing them promptly can help prevent accidents and ensure the longevity of your vehicle.
