Can high-tech displays boost feel-good factor?

The 2025 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas showcased the future of car interiors, with Continental unveiling its Emotional Cockpit concept. This innovative design combines cutting-edge electronics with displays framed by Swarovski crystal, known for its high-quality cut glass.

One of the standout features of the Emotional Cockpit is a floating 12.3-inch TFT display located beneath the center of the dashboard. This display is set beneath a transparent crystal surface and serves as the control element for both the driver and front passenger. The TFT technology utilized in this display incorporates full-array local dimming technology (FALD), which controls the backlighting. FALD, commonly used in LED TVs, divides the LED backlights into zones that can be dimmed in specific areas to enhance image quality.

Within the dashboard, there is a small ‘Widget Crystal’ that acts as an interaction surface for an AI assistant and interactive widgets providing information such as weather and location. The 3.5-inch Widget Crystal is powered by advanced micro-LED technology, known for its high intensity, although it has yet to be widely adopted due to cost constraints.

Continental’s design team has focused on creating displays with crystal casings that give the impression of images floating inside them. This unique approach aims to enhance the emotional attachment that owners have to their vehicles, a trend that both end users and car manufacturers are increasingly prioritizing.

In addition to the innovative TFT display, Continental has introduced an E Ink display as part of the Emotional Cockpit concept. This display utilizes ePaper technology, similar to that found in devices like Kindle e-readers, to mimic the appearance of a printed page. By incorporating these advanced display technologies, Continental is pushing the boundaries of automotive design and user experience.

The integration of Swarovski crystal elements and high-tech displays in the Emotional Cockpit concept represents a bold step towards the future of car interiors. As car manufacturers continue to prioritize emotional connections between owners and vehicles, innovations like these are likely to shape the next generation of automotive design.
